Jarrujen tehtävä on hiljentää kulkuneuvon nopeutta tai pysäyttää se.
Autoissa on tyypillisesti kahdella periaatteella toimivia jarruja: levyjarruja sekä rumpujarruja. Levyjarrut ovat tehokkaampia ja nykyään henkilöautoissa käytetäänkin lähes pelkästään niitä. Seisontajarru eli käsijarru on kuitenkin usein uusissakin autoissa rumputyyppinen, joka on sijoitettu takajarrulevyn sisälle.
Nykyautoissa on lähes poikkeuksetta kaksipiirijarrut, jolloin kumpaankin piiriin kuuluvat ainoastaan kahden pyörän jarrut (esim. oikean etu- ja vasemman takarenkaan jarrut). Tämä on tärkeää turvallisuuden kannalta, sillä vaikka toiseen piiriin tulisikin jokin vika, toimivat kahden pyörän jarrut silti normaalisti.
Jarrut ovat kehittyneet vuosien saatossa, nykyään käytännössä kaikissa autoissa on lukkiutumattomat jarrut.
Levyjarrut
Levyjarrussa jarrupalat puristuvat jarrulevyä vasten. Levyjarrut voivat olla jäähdytettyjä tai jäähdyttämättömiä. Jäähdytetyissä levyissä levyn pintojen välissä on tuuletusrakoja, joissa on jäähdytysripoja. Jäähdyttämättömissä levyissä levy on täyttä metallia. Jäähdyttämättömiä levyjä käytetään yleensä vain pienemmissä autoissa tai takalevyjarruissa.
Rumpujarrut
Rumpujarrussa jarrurummun sisäpuolella olevat jarrukenkien kitkapinnat puristuvat jarrutettaessa vasten pyörivää jarrurumpua, joka on kiinnitetty pyörään. Kitkapinnoista käytettiin aiemmin nimeä jarruhihnat.
Modernin auton rumpujarrun keksi Louis Renault vuonna 1902, vaikka vähemmän hienostuneempaa rumpujarrua käytettiin Maybachissa vuotta aiemmin. Ensimmäisissä rumpujarruissa jarrukenkiä käytettiin mekaanisesti vivuilla ja tangoilla tai vaijereilla. 1930-luvun puolivälistä lähtien kenkiä käytettiin öljyllä ja pienellä männällä, joka oli sylinterissä. Joissakin autoissa käytettiin kuitenkin puhtaasti mekaanisia järjestelmiä vielä vuosikymmeniä. Joissakin mailleissa on kaksi mäntää.
Rumpujarru ei ole niin tehokas kuin levyjarru ja niitä käytetään nykyautoissa yleisesti vain takapyörissä. Jarrutettaessa jarrurummun pyörimisliike puristaa auton kulkusuunnassa etummaista jarrukenkää (johtokenkää) tiukemmin jarrurumpua vasten. Osin myös tämän itsetehostusilmiön takia rumpujarrut olivat suositumpia vanhoissa autoissa: rumpujarrullisessa autossa ei välttämättä ole jarrutehostinta lainkaan, toisin kuin levyjarrullisissa autoissa.
Joissain autoissa on takalevyjarrun sisällä rumpujarru, jota käytetään vain käsijarruna.
